The fashion style that an individual appears in, is an indication of the person’s view point. Fashion according to Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary is a popular style of cloths, hair, ornament or jewelry, etc at a particular time or place.
We may be thinking, is fashion bad? Or how then should a believer/Christian dress? Or better still, is it bad for a Christian to follow a particular fashion trend that he or she like?
The word of the Lord in 1 Peter 3:3-5 described how fashion should be, by saying,
“Do not let your adornment be merely outward arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands.”
“I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.” 1 Timothy 2:9
We are to adorn ourselves with inner beauty and reduce the concentration towards outward appearance. If we concentrate our energies on following the trend on focusing on outward beauty, it will take a lot of money from an individual’s pocket because fashion is insatiable.
We are to remove our eyes and minds from earthly things that do not add value to our lives, because they will not endure the times. 1 John 2:15-17 admonishes us thus,
“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[a] is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.”
In choosing our fashion style, we should be careful to be modest not causing others to sin by lusting after you because of clothes or other accessories. Romans 14:15-16 says
“For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil.”
In conclusion, let us be modest in what we wear. Gianni Versace mentioned that, “Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live.”
